Ogden Resident Siera Green Gathers Community To Host Voter Engagement Workshop

“I wanted to provide a bite-size course that covers everything you would need to know to be an informed and empowered voter.

Q & A

UPDATE: “Because of the change in the political environment, we are moving the Voter Engagement Workshop to Sept.18 at 6 p.m. I was previously scheduled for Aug. 7. Recent changes seem to have sparked more of an interest.” — Siera Green, organizer

Q & A WITH SIERA GREEN

What sparked your interest in hosting this event?

I personally was feeling a bit lost and overwhelmed finding voting information. I knew that if I was having these questions, other people were probably in the same boat. When I was searching for answers it was really easy to get bogged down, but getting connected with the Weber County League of Women Voters (a local non-partisan organization) provided me with a support system where I felt encouraged to ask the "dumb" questions. I know that not everyone has the time or interest in joining an organization to get a sense of direction, so I wanted to provide a bite size course that covers everything you would need to know to be an informed and empowered voter.

Who else is involved?

This event is sponsored by the Weber County League of Women Voters. President Terri McCulloch, Barbara Wachocki, Tammy Ryan, Mazie Shepherd, and Siera Green are the organizers of the event. We will also have other members of the League and influential members of the community there as guest speakers.

Where did your interest in political engagement begin?

At times, my entire existence feels political. I am a member of multiple marginalized communities and growing up in Utah, I never felt that I saw myself reflected in community leadership. It wasn't until I moved to Hawaii for college that I was first able to experience being surrounded by diverse cultures. That was the first time I ever had a teacher of color, and saw people of color in working professional settings. I have experience working with the juvenile justice system, court system, and public defender's office which provided so many eye opening experiences into the sometimes invisible parts of our society. My hope is to use my voice and the privileges I do have to empower others to seek information, take up space, and take ownership of their communities.
