Ogden City Poet Laureate Angelika Brewer unveils the Ogden Ar(t)chives Mailbox that she created to make everyone’s voice a part of history, and turn it into art.
The Corner will soon have a new interactive sculpture. Ogden Poet Laureate Angelika Brewer unveils her latest community project, the Ogden Ar(t)chives Mailbox at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at The Corner, 2105 Washington Boulevard, on Friday, February 3 at 6 p.m. during Ogden’s First Friday Art Stroll.
“As a writer, I find it interesting how the personal writing of individuals has been a way for historians and researchers to piece together historical timelines and determine facts. Archives of correspondence are often a primary source of information. I thought to myself, ‘what if the public had an opportunity to tell the stories that will be read by historians about their communities?’” stated Brewer in a press release.
The metal mailbox, almost 5 feet tall, was designed and built by Daniel Christensen, with decorative elements added by Angelika Brewer and her father, Troy Brewer.
All are invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony and be among the first to drop submissions into the mailbox. Open all year long, mailbox contributions will be a compilation of literary artworks made by the residents and visitors of Ogden City to be shared on social media weekly, displayed in a yearly community art exhibit at Ogden Union Station, and archived in city records. Paper and pens will be available at the mailbox, and works may be submitted anonymously or signed.
From the artist:
“So much of history is understood by things people have written or drawn. Even still, there are so many stories that aren’t told, simply because they were never documented. The mailbox gives everyone the opportunity to have their story told.” —Angelika Brewer, Ogden Poet Laureate
