"Videos of Us in Handcuffs" is Standards & Substandard’s new EP featuring live recordings from the summer of 2022, released December 9, 2022, after the jazz quartet compiled some of their favorite tracks from the soundboard and created their own mixing.
FROM THE BAND: “We'd planned to do another studio recording (our first was in 2019), but we had so many great live gigs we never got to it this year. So, we just kept pushing the red button on our mixer to record when we had a chance out in those live spaces. We're at our best playing live where we can riff off one another and always create something that's slightly different than the last time. In these recordings, you get a feel for the settings we get to play in, sonically and otherwise. The inspiration for the title came from the last track on the EP, recorded at an outdoor patio party. As we're playing on the intro, you'll hear our drummer, Ian, talking to the rest of us about how he wants to get the cops called on us (due to a noise complaint, maybe), and he continues to talk about what great PR it would be if there were "videos of us in handcuffs" as we're being taken away. It's great that the drum mics could capture that daydream at the same time Ian is laying out the rhythm of the song. We realized that live gigs are where we experience the spirit of playing that we love, in the moment. This is our attempt to preserve and share that.” —Adam Johnston, piano, Standards & Substandards
