Cam Gallagher wants you to get Funked

ALBUM REVIEW

“Funk Out” (2022) is the debut album by SLC funk collective Cam Gallagher & The Tasty Soul.

By Paddy Teglia

Cover: Rodger Matteo

Right from the get-go this album lets you know it is going to be something different. With an intro track that is reminiscent of any Parliament or classic Funk album from the 70s, you know you’re in for a ride.

Cam Gallagher & The Tasty Soul take you on a trip through groovy beats and a taste of New Orleans Jazz-style rhythms. Fans of bands such as Galactic will truly enjoy the layered, and at times battling, horns that feature heavily through each track.

As with any good funk album, you can’t turn a blind eye to the driving bass lines and ripping guitar that compliment those horns. Songs such as “Snickelfritz” and the Tasty Soul’s take on the Tears for Fears classic “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” feature the perfect soulful vocals to really complete the whole ensemble of the meticulously crafted music that goes along with it.

If you dig funky grooves and soulful vocals, this is an album you might consider putting on your radar.
